Since her debut on "Touhou Koumakyou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil", the ice fairy Cirno has remained a popular character in the Touhou fan community as well as within the general anime/manga/video game community. For over 20 years and counting, Cirno has been beloved by fans from all over the world. It should be noted that much of the following information is what is shown in fan material and not all of it may necessarily apply to official material, where Cirno (despite being a popular character) is seldom seen.

Cirno is an ice fairy who lives at an igloo in the Misty Lake (which is near the Scarlet Devil Mansion, hosted by Remilia Scarlet) with her best friend Daiyousei in Gensokyo, which serves as the setting for the Touhou series. The only other resident of the Misty Lake is a mermaid named Wakasagihime. Cirno's other friends are Rumia, Wriggle Nightbug, Mystia Lorelei, Sunny Milk, Luna Child, Star Sapphire, Lily White, and Eternity Larva. Letty Whiterock is considered to be a mother of Cirno. Cirno's rival is Suwako Moriya. Cirno likes to freeze frogs and challenge others to danmaku battles. Cirno often gets into trouble for doing those things, Suwako in particular takes great offense to Cirno freezing frogs and has often tried to get revenge on Cirno for doing so. Cirno likes to challenge those who are obviously much stronger than she claims to be, such as the Touhou series protagonists Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Cirno, Daiyousei, and Rumia attend Keine Kamishirasawa's school in the Human Village. Cirno is considered to be the strongest among her fellow fairies, but not among the general populace of Gensokyo, which consists of various species. Cirno normally wears a blue bow on her head, but sometimes she may wear a green or red one. She also may sometimes wear shoes or be completely barefoot. To the other residents of Gensokyo, Cirno is considered to be quite childish, or maybe even of low intelligence. Cirno has the ability to manipulate the cold, and she uses that ability in danmaku battles.

CANON: At some point before "Hidden Star in Four Seasons", Cirno gets a tan. After Cirno defeats Okina Matara, she suggests that Cirno work for her. Cirno is unsure because she had seen fairy maids before (presumably because she lives near the Scarlet Devil Mansion) and didn't want to become some kind of slave. Okina tells her to try thinking about it, saying "we have all the time in the world". It is unclear whether Cirno took the offer or not, as Cirno has not been seen in Touhou (minus a very minor appearance on a card in Unconnected Marketeers) since. I await Cirno's return, but this is up to ZUN, not me.

The difference between the regular version of Cirno and the tanned version of Cirno is that, well, besides the obvious, there's also vines around her, and she is wearing a sunflower ribbon. This is apparently a reference to Tanned Sakura from the MARVEL VS. CAPCOM series.
